St. Theresa of Avila, Virgin, Doctor (Memorial)

GOD CARETH FOR YOU

Jesus cautions his disciples against the yeast of the Pharisees - their hypocrisy.  He instructs them not to follow anyone in fear for they can only kill the body and nothing more afterwards. Instead, to fear God who has the authority to cast into hell.  He goes on to speak about the care, concern and providence of God.  Five sparrows for two pennies means an insignificant value of the sparrow, still, not even one of them is forgotten by God.  Human beings are much more valuable to God that even their hairs of the head are counted.

We are created in the likeness and image of God (Gen. 1: 27).  We contain God’s breadth in our being (Gen. 2:7).   We are made like God but less than a God (Ps. 8:5).  We are crowned with God’s glory and honour (Ps. 8:5).  We are precious in the eyes of God, honoured and loved by Him (Is. 43:4).  Still, we fled in fear, delve in diffidence, wane in worry and live in anxiety.  Today the Church celebrates the feast of St. Theresa of Avila who says, “Let nothing disturb you, Let nothing frighten you, though all things pass, God does not change. He lacks nothing who possesses God; For God alone suffices”.  Yes, cast all your worries and anxieties on Him as the Bible says, for God cares for you (1Pt. 5:7).  May our mind and heart resonate with the prayer, “Jesus, I trust in you”.
